Steinheim Bagdad
Steinheim Bagdad refers to a local German Bagdad, or Bagdette-type, fancy pigeon associated with Steinheim. The word Bagdad in pigeon names usually points to the old carrier and wattle-pigeon family rather than to modern message carrying. These birds are selected for a strong head, pronounced beak and eye cere, firm body and alert carriage, all on the domestic Columba livia foundation. Compared with racing homers, the interest is outline and head furnishing, not speed over distance.
Husbandry should protect the features that define the breed without letting them become a handicap. Heavy wattles and eye ceres need clean, dry loft conditions and should not block vision, feeding or breathing. Perches that are too rough can damage the face, while crowded nest boxes lead to scuffed cere and broken feathers. Breeders usually pair for head type, vigor and fertility together; a handsome Bagdad that cannot rear squabs well is of limited value in a small specialty loft.
