Strasser
The Strasser is a large utility and exhibition pigeon developed in Central Europe, especially the Austrian, Czech and German fancy. It is a domestic Columba livia breed with a broad breast, deep body and calm, heavy look that reflects its origin as a squab-producing pigeon. The classic Strasser impression is a white-bodied bird with colored head, wings, tail and rump, though standards recognize several colors and markings. Show breeders look for substance without coarseness, a clean outline and strong station.
Strassers are often easier to manage than very ornamental breeds, but their size changes the loft plan. Nest boxes should be roomy, perches stable and floors kept dry so heavy birds do not soil their feathering. A balanced grain mix with minerals supports breeding, while overfeeding can reduce fertility and make birds clumsy. Buyers should distinguish between show Strassers and utility strains selected for squab output; both can be worthwhile, but they are judged by different priorities. Good parents, steady temperament and sound legs matter as much as color.
