Swallow Pigeon
In pigeon fancy, swallow pigeon usually refers to a family of ornamental domestic pigeons, especially German and central European color pigeons, with markings that set colored wing shields against a mostly white body. Some standards divide them into Saxon, Thuringian, Silesian, or Bohemian forms, so the name can mean a general type rather than one uniform breed. Many are mainly white with colored wings, and several varieties add feathered feet, a crest, or small head markings.
They are kept mainly for exhibition and small fancy lofts rather than racing. The marked wings need ordinary pigeon care, but heavily muffed varieties do best on dry floors and low, clean perches that do not break foot feathering. Breeding focuses on crisp shield color, symmetrical markings, healthy fertility, and a body that still moves and feeds normally. Buyers should check which swallow standard a seller follows, because a show-quality Saxon Swallow and a broadly named swallow pigeon may be judged by different details.
