Swiss Mondain
Large, broad, and utility-bred, the Swiss Mondain is the Swiss form of the Mondain utility pigeon, developed from the European tradition of heavy squab and exhibition birds. Compared with racing homers or small color pigeons, it has a broad body, deep breast, strong bone, and calm, ground-covering stance. The breed is often discussed alongside French Mondains, but Swiss lines may be maintained under their own standard for size, type, and balance.
People keep Swiss Mondains for exhibition, preservation breeding, and, in some lofts, meat or squab production. Their size calls for roomy nest boxes, sturdy perches set low enough for heavy birds, and careful attention to body condition; an overweight Mondain may look impressive but breed poorly. Productive pairs are valued for fertility, steady sitting, and good crop feeding. A clean loft and a balanced grain ration with minerals matter more than forced growth, especially for young birds being raised as future breeders.
