Swiss Pouter
A Swiss cropper rather than a racing pigeon, the Swiss pouter is selected for the ability to inflate the crop into a rounded globe during display. It belongs to the same broad fancy group as other pouters and croppers, but Swiss breeding traditions give it a particular outline, stance, and set of accepted colors. A good bird should look lively and upright without becoming weak in body or awkward in movement.
Management starts with moderate selection. Birds that can show a full crop yet still eat, court, mate, and feed their young are more useful than extreme individuals that need constant help. The loft should be dry and uncrowded, since pouters can be pushed off perches or injure themselves when startled. Breeders pair for globe shape, station, feather quality, and reliable parent rearing. New keepers should confirm the relevant standard, as the name is rare outside specialist European pigeon clubs.
