Syrian Fantail
The Syrian Fantail is a Levantine domestic pigeon within the fantail group, bred for a broad lifted tail, compact body, and upright display posture. It is less widely standardized internationally than Indian or American fantails, and available descriptions may reflect Syrian loft practice as much as formal exhibition rules. Like all domestic pigeons, it descends from the rock dove, Columba livia, with selection here focused on tail carriage, balance, feather spread, and local color preferences.
Fantail management is practical but must account for the tail. Low roomy nest boxes, uncluttered perches, clean floors, and dry bedding help prevent broken or soiled feathers. Many Syrian Fantails are kept for display and breeding pens rather than long-distance flight, so vigor, fertility, and natural mating ability should not be sacrificed for a larger fan. Buyers should look for an even tail spread, stable posture, clear eyes, clean feet, and lines that rear chicks reliably in ordinary loft conditions.
