Szolnok Bagdad
The Szolnok Bagdad is a Hungarian fancy pigeon associated with the city of Szolnok and usually placed among the Bagdad, or bagdetta, show-pigeon types. These domestic pigeons are descendants of the rock pigeon, Columba livia, but the breed identity comes from exhibition features rather than homing or meat production. Fanciers look for a strong, clean outline, an alert head, a fairly long face and beak, and the dry, carrier-like expression typical of Bagdad pigeons. Color names may include blue, black, ash red, almond, grizzle, dilute, and related bar or checker patterns, depending on the standard used.
This is a specialist loft bird for keepers who enjoy traditional Central European fancy pigeons. Housing should be dry, well ventilated, and not overcrowded, because feather condition and the face and eye area of Bagdad-type birds show neglect quickly. Breeding programs usually pair for head quality, balance, station, and vigor rather than flight performance. Stock can be scarce outside its region, so buyers should compare birds against a current standard and ask whether the line is bred mainly for exhibition.
