Thurgau Elmer
The Thurgau Elmer is a less widely known named variety in the Swiss Thurgau pigeon group, made up of domestic pigeons descended from Columba livia. It is best understood as a regional colour pigeon: a compact, active bird selected for a traditional local type and marking rather than for racing, tumbling, or meat production. Outside specialist clubs, the name may be translated or applied unevenly, so photographs of mature birds and the breeder's standard are often more useful than the label alone.
Keeping is much like managing other small to medium fancy pigeons. A clean loft with good ventilation, dry floors, secure wire, and regular bath access will preserve feather condition and reduce staining on light areas. Pairing decisions focus on type, colour depth, and repeatable markings; close inbreeding to hold a scarce pattern needs attention to fertility and chick strength. The variety fits lofts run by fanciers who enjoy maintaining a regional strain and comparing offspring against a detailed colour-pigeon standard.
