Thurgau Monk
The Thurgau monk is a Swiss colour pigeon variety named for the monk pattern, a sharp contrast between coloured and white sections that gives the bird a hooded, formal look. Like other Thurgau pigeons, it is a domestic pigeon of rock dove ancestry, usually medium in size, alert, and built on a practical field-pigeon frame. Fanciers may work with black, blue, red, brown, dilute, bar, checker, or grizzle-based colours, but the value of the bird lies in even marking, clean feathering, and typical carriage.
In the loft, Thurgau monks are managed as fancy show pigeons. They need the same daily reliability expected of any domestic pigeon: dry housing, fresh water, grit, and enough space to court, nest, and exercise without soiling their plumage. Breeding for monk markings requires patience, since coloured feathers can creep into white areas and vice versa. Pairs are best assessed after the first molt, when head and body markings are easier to judge, and stock should be handled gently so calm temperament is retained.
