Thurgau Shield
The Thurgau shield is a Swiss colour pigeon in which the wing shields carry the main marking. In pigeon terms, the shield is the broad panel of wing coverts seen when the bird is at rest, so the variety is judged on how cleanly that area is coloured or patterned against the rest of the plumage. It remains a true domestic pigeon, related to Columba livia, with a moderate body and active temperament typical of regional European colour breeds.
Show preparation is mostly about clean loft management and sensible pairing. Shield markings reveal smudging, stray white feathers, uneven bars, and weak colour quickly, especially after the young bird molt. Fanciers housing several marked breeds should avoid accidental crosses, because one season can undo years of selection for precise wings. A ventilated loft, secure flight, bathing pan, grit, and consistent feed will meet ordinary needs; the challenge is selecting birds that combine the desired wing pattern with fertility and sound pigeon behavior.
