Thuringian White-Head
The Thuringian white-head is a German color pigeon from Thuringia and nearby central German pigeon country. Like all domestic pigeons, it descends from the rock dove, Columba livia, but it is selected mainly for a clean exhibition marking rather than for homing or production. Its defining feature is a white head set against a colored body, wings, and tail. The body is moderate and field-pigeon-like, with active carriage and tight feathering. Standard colors may include blue, black, red, yellow, dun, checker, grizzle, almond, and related pigeon color varieties.
In the loft it is kept as an ornamental and show pigeon that still benefits from ordinary, practical pigeon management. Breeding decisions center on the sharpness of the white head, even body color, sound eyes and beak, and steady parenting. Dry nest boxes, clean perches, grit, bathing water, and a balanced grain mix are usually more important than any special treatment. Buyers should compare birds with the standard used by the club or country where they intend to show.
