Thuringian Wing Pigeon
The Thuringian wing pigeon is a German color pigeon associated with Thuringia, where many regional marked pigeons were developed for farm lofts and exhibition pens. Its name refers to the emphasis on the wings: in typical show descriptions, colored wing shields stand out on a largely white bird, while the standard sets the finer rules for flights, bars, and edge markings. The bird is moderate in build, alert, and close-feathered, with the practical look of a color pigeon rather than a heavily ornamented fancy breed.
Keepers usually breed Thuringian wing pigeons for exhibition pattern, color depth, and clean separation between the white body and colored wing areas. White feathers stain easily, so a dry loft, uncluttered perches, and frequent access to bathing water are useful for birds headed to shows. Feeding and housing are otherwise ordinary for domestic pigeons: good grain, grit, minerals, secure nesting places, and protection from rodents and predators. When buying, it helps to see both parents, since wing markings can shift noticeably within a family.
