Transylvanian Back-Crested Tumbler
The Transylvanian back-crested tumbler is a regional tumbler pigeon from Transylvania, the historic area now mostly in Romania. It is a domestic pigeon breed, not a separate wild species, selected for a neat tumbler body and a crest carried at the back of the head. That rear crest, often described as shell-like or mane-like depending on the standard, separates it from plainer Transylvanian tumblers and from double-crested forms. Color and marking preferences vary by line, but the bird should keep an alert, balanced appearance without looking overdone.
Fanciers keep back-crested Transylvanian tumblers for exhibition, preservation of regional stock, and sometimes light flying where old aerial habits remain. The crest makes head shape and feather condition important, yet breeding should also protect vigor, fertility, and reliable parenting. A dry loft, fresh grit, sound perches, clean nest bowls, and enough room to avoid broken crest feathers are practical basics. Because the breed can be scarce outside specialist circles, new buyers should work with keepers who can explain the strain and the standard they use.
