Valencian Homer
Valencia has a long pigeon culture, and the Valencian homer belongs to the domestic pigeon strains selected there for returning to a home loft. It should be understood as a regional homer or homing-type pigeon descended from Columba livia, not automatically the same as the modern racing homer used in international competition. Depending on line and registry, birds may be judged by body balance, wing quality, head, eye, and working ability. Color is secondary in many homer strains, with blue, check, ash red, grizzle, dilute, and other common pigeon colors all possible.
A working loft for Valencian homers is built around routine. Young birds must be settled before release, then trained gradually so they learn the area and trap reliably. Breeders who value performance pay close attention to family results, health, feather quality, and steady temperament; show-only lines may not have the same navigation record. Quarantine new birds, clarify whether they are bred for flying or exhibition, and avoid releasing purchased adults unless the risk of losing them is understood.
