Varna Tumbler
Named for the Black Sea city of Varna, the Varna tumbler is a Bulgarian domestic pigeon breed within the Balkan tumbler tradition. These pigeons are descended from Columba livia and have been selected for active loft flying with tumbling or rolling behavior, along with the compact type favored by local fanciers. As with many regional tumblers, exact details of crest, foot feathering, markings, and carriage can vary by club or line. The practical identity of the bird is tied less to a single color than to its flight style, balance, and local standard.
Varna tumblers are kept best by fanciers who can train a small kit regularly and evaluate the flight safely. Young birds are usually settled carefully, flown hungry enough to trap, and protected from hawks and severe weather. Deep or uncontrolled rolling can injure pigeons, so breeders should favor birds that tumble cleanly and recover well. Loft management is otherwise straightforward: dry quarters, moderate feed, dependable trapping, and selection for health as well as performance or show points.
