Veleño Pouter
The Veleño pouter, or buchón Veleño, is a Spanish cropper from the area of Vélez-Málaga in Andalusia. Like other pouters, it is a domestic form of Columba livia with an enlarged crop that the bird inflates during display. It belongs to the Spanish buchón tradition, where carriage, courting behavior, and the ability to work around the home loft have long mattered alongside appearance. Typical birds are medium-sized, active, and expressive, with a crop carried prominently rather than the spherical globe of some northern European croppers.
Fanciers often house mature males with enough room to display without constant fighting, and pairs need calm nest areas where the crop is not abraded by sharp fronts or crowded perches. Condition matters: an overweight Veleño may lose the athletic look and flight expected in working lines. Breeders should select for sound breathing, reliable parenting, steady temperament, and the specific standard used by their Spanish or local club. In some places, outdoor flying of pouters is affected by local rules and neighborhood tolerance.
