Waldviertel Cropper
The Waldviertel cropper is an Austrian pouter or cropper pigeon from the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria. Like other domestic pigeons, it descends from Columba livia, but it has been selected for an upright stance, a visibly inflated crop, and a lively, showy carriage. It is a regional fancy breed rather than a utility pigeon, with breeders judging it on balance, crop shape, body length, station, feather quality, and the clarity of its accepted colors and markings.
For keepers, the main concern is giving these birds space to display without crowding or damaging the inflated crop. A dry loft, secure aviary access, stable perches, and a measured grain-based diet suit most lines. Breeding stock should be chosen for vigor and natural parenting as well as outline, because overemphasis on crop size can make a bird less functional. Outside Austria and nearby fancy-pigeon circles, buyers may need to confirm the standard used by the club or registry.
