Bengal Ornamental Tarantula
Poecilotheria miranda
The Bengal ornamental tarantula is an arboreal spider from India. Adults have a gray carapace with paired brown bands and a pale abdominal ribbon with dark markings. Pale front knees contrast with the dark knees of P. subfusca; the undersides of the front thighs are black. Specialist tarantula hobbyists keep it singly with upright bark, a secure retreat, ventilation and water.
Avoid handling, as Poecilotheria bites can cause severe pain and prolonged muscle cramps. Females lay eggs in silk sacs. International trade is regulated under CITES Appendix II.
