Yellow Backed Ornamental Tarantula
Poecilotheria smithi
The yellow backed ornamental tarantula is a scarce Sri Lankan tree spider with pale dorsal markings and strongly banded legs. Black front-thigh undersides with thin white edges and mostly white knee undersides separate it from P. subfusca. Specialist hobbyists keep it singly with upright bark, a secure retreat, ventilation and water.
Avoid handling; Poecilotheria bites can cause severe pain and prolonged muscle cramps. Females lay eggs in silk sacs. It is US-listed endangered, with regulated trade and interstate commerce, and CITES Appendix II regulates international trade.
