Porcellio baeticensis
Porcellio baeticensis
Porcellio baeticensis is a woodlouse recorded from the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, including sheltered underground sites. Captive lines are sold as violet isopods, with pale lavender to deeper purple coloration. It has a broad segmented body and cannot roll into a tight ball. Colonies need an airy, leaf-rich substrate, decaying wood, calcium and both damp retreats and drier cover. Females brood eggs and developing young in a pouch beneath the body, then release live offspring.
