Red And Black Roach
Opisthoplatia orientalis
The red-and-black roach is a widely distributed species maintained by specialist breeders. Mature adults develop glossy contrasting red and black coloring with pale fringes on the head shield, while the flatter young are brown and gray. Colonies use bark shelters, moist organic substrate, ventilation and varied food. Females retain their egg cases and release live young. Adults climb and cannot fly, so a secure lid is important. The adult color pattern should not be confused with the juvenile form.
