Red-Headed Poison Frog
Ranitomeya fantastica
This variable poison frog inhabits northeastern Peru and is bred by specialist hobbyists. The Yurimaguas form shown has an orange head, cream neck band, black trunk and patterned limbs. Keepers provide humid planted terrariums, leaf litter, tiny insect prey and protected horizontal egg sites. Females lay eggs, and males move the tadpoles to small water reservoirs. The cream neck band separates this form from the red-headed Shucushuyacu blessed poison frog; other populations look different.
