Red-Spotted Toad
Anaxyrus punctatus
This small toad inhabits rocky washes and other dry habitats in the southwestern United States and Mexico. Specialist amphibian keepers provide ground-level enclosures with cover, substrate, moist retreats, clean water and small invertebrate prey. Adults have scattered reddish warts and small round glands behind the eyes. Females lay eggs in water after rain, and the larvae develop in pools. Its red spots and rounded glands distinguish it from the much larger Sonoran desert toad.
