Rio Cauca Caecilian
Typhlonectes natans
The Rio Cauca caecilian is an aquatic, limbless amphibian from Colombia and Venezuela. Dark blue-gray skin, ringlike grooves and tiny skin-covered eyes distinguish it from an eel or snake. Females give birth to live young. Aquariums and specialist amphibian keepers provide clean, warm water, secure refuges, surface access and an escape-proof enclosure, feeding suitable animal-based foods. It has no true tail and remains aquatic throughout life. The hobby name "rubber eel" refers to this amphibian.
