Rio Grande Gold Tarantula
Aphonopelma moderatum
The Rio Grande gold tarantula occurs in southern Texas, especially counties along the Rio Grande. Adult females have a gold-brown carapace and tan-orange leg segments separated by dark knees and other dark bands; males become darker. It occupies burrows in thornscrub and other open habitats and is kept by tarantula hobbyists. House it singly in a low, secure enclosure with a hide, diggable substrate and water. Avoid handling and its irritating defensive hairs. Females lay eggs in a silk sac.
