Rock Hyrax
Procavia capensis
The rock hyrax is a stocky, short-eared African mammal that shelters among rocks and grazes or browses nearby vegetation. It resembles a large rodent but belongs to a different mammal order related to elephants and sea cows. Zoos keep social groups with rocky climbing surfaces, sunny resting places and protected retreats. Females bear live young that can move soon after birth. Its gripping foot pads and almost invisible tail suit life on steep outcrops.
