Sabana Surinam Toad
Pipa parva
The Sabana Surinam toad is a small, flattened aquatic frog from northern South America. Zoos and specialist keepers maintain it in clean freshwater with bottom cover and suitable animal prey. It lays eggs that become embedded in the female's back after mating. Unlike the larger Surinam toad, it releases free-swimming tadpoles rather than fully formed froglets. Its flat brown body and small eyes suit life among submerged leaves; it should not be kept as a land-dwelling toad.
