Salem Ornamental Tarantula
Poecilotheria formosa
The Salem ornamental tarantula is an arboreal spider from India. Adults have gray-brown dorsal patterns and strongly contrasting pale and dark leg markings. The rear-thigh undersides lack the complete black band of P. tigrinawesseli, though reliable identification also needs provenance.
Specialist tarantula hobbyists keep it singly with upright bark, a secure retreat, ventilation and water. Avoid handling, as Poecilotheria bites can cause severe pain and prolonged muscle cramps. Females lay eggs in silk sacs. International trade is regulated under CITES Appendix II.
