Unknown breed for scaled quail usually means the bird is known as Callipepla squamata but its line, subspecies influence, or breeder strain has not been recorded. Scaled quail are not divided into domestic breeds in the way chickens or ducks are, so the phrase is often a placeholder for missing provenance. The visible bird may look completely typical, with a blue-gray body, scaled neck and breast, chestnut belly in some forms, and a short pale crest.
