Serrognathus bucephalus
Serrognathus bucephalus
Serrognathus bucephalus is an Indonesian stag beetle often maintained under the older combination Dorcus bucephalus. Broad-jawed adult males have a wide black head and heavy mandibles bearing flattened inner teeth. Females have much smaller jaws and lay eggs in firm, white-rotted hardwood.
Larvae can develop in the logs or in prepared fermented hardwood substrate or suitable fungal culture. Larvae should be housed separately, and adult pairings supervised, because crowded larvae may become cannibalistic and males can injure females.
