Seychelles Giant Millipede
Sechelleptus seychellarum
The Seychelles giant millipede is a large, thick-bodied island millipede with a dark trunk, rusty ring margins and many brown-orange legs. It belongs to a coordinated zoo conservation breeding program that maintains an insurance population for its restricted island range.
Zoo husbandry uses deep, moist organic substrate and leaf litter, with vegetables and a calcium source. It often remains underground and should not be disturbed while molting. Females lay eggs. Its defensive secretion can stain skin, so handling is minimized.
