Ancon

Ancon sheep are a historical American sheep type famous for a short-legged mutation that appeared in Massachusetts in the late eighteenth century. The flock was reportedly propagated because its low, crooked-legged build made the sheep easier to contain behind modest fences. Ancon is therefore less a modern production breed than an important livestock-genetics example, often mentioned in discussions of inherited skeletal traits and early selective breeding.

There are no ordinary contemporary Ancon flocks for a buyer to manage as a mainstream breed. If the name appears in records, it should be treated as historical unless a preservation source can document otherwise. The practical lesson is that a useful containment trait can carry welfare and soundness concerns, especially if leg structure limits movement or grazing. For museums, educators, and breed historians, Ancon sheep are worth noting because they show how quickly a visible mutation can shape a named livestock population.
