Armenian Semicoarsewool
Armenian Semicoarsewool sheep are a Transcaucasian regional breed type developed for meat, milk, and semi-coarse fleece in Armenia's mountain and foothill systems. The name describes a production class as well as a regional identity: these sheep are not finewool Merinos, but neither are they merely hair sheep. They are expected to handle altitude, seasonal forage, and village or pastoral management while producing wool suitable for practical textiles.
Flock value rests on balanced usefulness. Ewes should raise lambs, provide milk where household or local processing uses it, and grow fleeces that can serve carpets, felts, or mixed craft purposes. Management needs sturdy winter feeding plans, sound feet for rugged grazing, and protection of local lines from indiscriminate crossing. Breeders should record wool character, color, tail type, and valley or district origin when known, since regional semicoarsewool sheep can differ meaningfully across neighboring areas.
