Badger Face Welsh Mountain
Badger Face Welsh Mountain sheep are a color-patterned Welsh hill breed named for face and belly markings that recall a badger pattern. Two main types are recognized: Torddu, the black-bellied pattern with dark facial stripes on a pale body, and Torwen, the reverse white-bellied pattern on a darker body. They are small to medium Welsh Mountain sheep with toughness, alert movement, and a fleece suited more to practical wool uses than fine apparel.
These sheep fit rough grazing, conservation grazing, and small farms that need a thrifty ewe rather than a large intensive lowland breed. They lamb readily in suitable conditions and have strong mothering ability, but exposed hill ground still calls for sensible lambing checks and enough shelter from severe weather. Foot care, shearing, and parasite monitoring remain routine. Breeders usually watch both sound hill-sheep structure and correct Torddu or Torwen markings because the pattern is central to breed identity.
