Bellary
Bellary sheep are an Indian breed from the Deccan region, especially Karnataka areas around Ballari, where sheep are kept for meat under dry, semi-arid conditions. They are generally hardy, medium-sized sheep with coarse hair or hairy fleece rather than a fine wool clip, and colors can vary. Local selection emphasizes survival, walking ability, lamb production, and the ability to use sparse grazing and crop residues.
In practice, Bellary sheep fit smallholder and pastoral systems more than intensive wool enterprises. Management should focus on seasonal feed gaps, parasite control during wetter periods, mineral access, and protection from heat stress. Rams are selected for soundness and growth, while ewes earn their place by lambing regularly under modest inputs. When recording or buying Bellary stock, region and flock source are useful details because Indian sheep breeds are often locally adapted, and crossbreeding with larger meat types can dilute traits that make them valuable in dry country.
