Black Welsh Mountain
Black Welsh Mountain is a small, hardy hill sheep from Wales, carrying a naturally black fleece and a compact frame suited to upland grazing. It is a distinct color breed rather than simply a dark individual from a white flock. The sheep are valued for thrift, soundness, easy lambing, and the ability to produce lamb and wool from exposed pasture where larger lowland breeds may need more support.
Flock management is usually low-input but still careful: mineral balance, foot health, weather-aware lambing, and predator protection all matter. The black wool is useful for handspinning and natural-colored textile work, though fleece value rarely replaces meat income. Breeders should maintain the breed's small hill-sheep character instead of selecting only for size. Registered stock, flock history, and color consistency are helpful for buyers, especially because black crossbred lambs can resemble the breed without carrying its heritage or performance traits.
