Bovec Sheep
The Bovec sheep is a Slovenian dairy breed associated with the Bovec and upper Soca valley region in the Julian Alps. It is traditionally kept in mountain and valley systems where milk production, local cheese, and adaptation to rugged grazing matter more than large carcass size. Fleece and color can vary, but the breed is usually understood through its regional dairy role and its link to upland pastoral culture.
Practical Bovec management depends on milking routine, udder health, lamb rearing, and access to forage that supports lactation without pushing animals beyond local conditions. Conservation and breeding programs should pay attention to origin, flock family, and whether animals represent the mountain type rather than a generic dairy cross. For small dairies, the breed's fit depends on climate, grazing access, labor for milking, and markets for sheep milk products.
