Cambridge
The Cambridge is a British prolific sheep breed developed through research and selection for high litter size and maternal performance. It is best understood as a breeding resource for fertility rather than a conventional regional hill or longwool breed. Cambridge genetics have been used in commercial ewe systems where extra lambs are valuable and where management can support the added reproductive load.
Using Cambridge sheep successfully depends on feed, supervision, and realistic lambing plans. Ewes that scan with triplets or larger litters need nutrition, shelter, and decisions about fostering or artificial rearing in some systems. Rams can add prolificacy to crossing programs, but the trait should be matched with udder quality, lamb vigor, and market conditions. The breed rewards careful management more than casual low-input use.
