Castlemilk Moorit
The Castlemilk Moorit is a rare British sheep breed created at the Castlemilk estate in Scotland from primitive and ornamental sheep selected for a soft moorit-brown fleece and refined type. It is small to medium, horned, and easy to recognize by its warm brown wool, pale belly, and light, deerlike outline. Today it sits firmly in rare-breed, conservation grazing, and heritage-fiber circles.
Castlemilk Moorit keepers should plan for careful conservation breeding, safe horn handling, and fleece marketing that respects the natural brown color. The breed can suit smallholdings and conservation grazing where moderate size is useful, but flock owners still need to select for sound mouths, feet, lambing ability, parasite resilience, and sensible temperament. Pedigree awareness matters because the population is limited and popular sires can narrow diversity. Good records make small flocks more valuable to the wider breed.
