Coolalee
The Coolalee is an Australian sheep breed developed for prime lamb production, with selection aimed at fertility, growth, and useful carcass traits in commercial conditions. It is generally treated as a meat-focused maternal or dual-purpose breed rather than a specialty wool sheep. Australian development gives the breed a practical identity tied to pasture, dry seasons, and market lamb systems.
Coolalee flocks should be evaluated through ewe productivity, lamb survival, growth to market weight, feet, and temperament under routine handling. Rams may be useful where producers want productive crossbred lambs without relying only on imported terminal sire breeds. As with any composite or newer breed, buyers should ask about the foundation of the flock, recorded performance, and whether selection favors maternal ewes or slaughter lambs.
