Cormo

The Cormo is a finewool sheep breed developed in Australia from Corriedale and Saxon Merino ancestry, with later populations in North America and elsewhere. It was selected to combine fine, bright fleece with a more moderate, productive body than many ultra-fine Merino lines. The name reflects that Corriedale and Merino background, and the breed is often favored by handspinners and small fiber flocks.

Cormo keepers usually pay close attention to micron, crimp, staple length, fleece weight, and whether sheep remain sound and fertile while producing fine wool. The breed can be useful for premium fiber, but fine fleece brings management demands around shearing, nutrition, and protection from fleece contamination. Breeding choices should balance wool measurements with lambing, feet, parasite resilience, and a body that fits the farm.
