Devon Closewool
Devon Closewool sheep are a West Country breed developed around Exmoor and the surrounding Devon border country, with Exmoor Horn and Devon Longwool influence in their background. They are medium-sized, polled, white-faced sheep with a close, useful fleece and a calm, solid appearance.
The breed is mainly a grassland and upland farm sheep, valued for docile handling, hardy ewes, and lamb production from permanent pasture. Devon Closewools are also used in crossing systems, especially where a farm wants a maternal ewe with milk, fleshing ability, and enough structure to work outside without constant intervention. That makes them a practical bridge between native conservation breeding and ordinary commercial flock work, particularly on grass farms that need maternal ewes.
