Devon Longwoolled
Devon Longwoolled is an older West Country longwool name tied to the Devon Longwool and the later Devon and Cornwall Longwool tradition. These sheep were large, polled, white-faced longwools, bred for heavy fleeces and useful carcasses in the moister pastures of southwest England.
Because the historic Devon Longwool was folded into the Devon and Cornwall Longwool population, modern references need careful reading. Conservation flocks and longwool breeders focus on keeping the old fleece character, frame, and regional identity alive while still selecting sheep that can lamb, graze, and shear cleanly under present-day farm conditions. For fiber buyers, staple length, lock character, and freedom from felting are central questions, while farmers still need sheep that stand up to wet ground.
