Elinpelin Sheep
Elinpelin sheep are a Bulgarian local breed also called Sofia or Elin Pelin sheep, named for the region east of Sofia where the type has been kept. They are long-tailed, comparatively large sheep, usually white, sometimes with dark eye or muzzle markings that give some animals a recognizable face. The breed belongs to mixed regional farming rather than to one highly specialized production role.
Flocks are managed for milk, meat, and wool in village and regional systems. Conservation and breeding records matter because the population is limited, and useful selection focuses on strong hooves, milk yield, fertility, and performance under grazing plus winter housing. Because the breed is regional, preserving unrelated families can be as important as selecting the heaviest lambs, especially in small conservation flocks. Buyers should ask about source village or flock, recent crossing, and whether animals are maintained under a formal breed program.
