Gansu Alpine Fine-Wool
Gansu Alpine Fine-wool sheep are a Chinese fine-wool breed developed for cold upland conditions in and around Gansu. The name points to both purpose and environment: these sheep were selected to produce a finer fleece while remaining useful on high, exposed pasture. Merino-type influence is commonly associated with fine-wool development, but the practical value of the breed depends on its ability to hold condition and reproduce in alpine systems.
Management centers on wool quality, winter feed planning, and protection of lambs in harsh weather. Flocks need enough nutrition to support fleece growth without losing the hardiness that makes the breed useful in its home region. Buyers should ask about staple length, fiber diameter where measured, lamb survival, and whether the line is maintained for wool, meat, or a balanced local program.
