Gökçeada

Gökçeada sheep, also known as Imroz sheep, are a Turkish island breed from Gökçeada in the Aegean Sea. They are a hardy local dairy and meat type shaped by island grazing, seasonal feed, and relatively low-input management. The breed is often noted for adaptation and milk use rather than for the highly specialized output of modern commercial dairy sheep.

For owners, Gökçeada sheep make the most sense in small dairy, regional conservation, or mixed farm settings where hardiness and mothering matter. Milk yield, udder quality, and lamb performance can vary by line, so flock history is important. Conservation programs may also track island ancestry closely because local breeds can lose their identity quickly through casual crossing.
