Herdwick
The Herdwick is the grey hill sheep of England's Lake District, shaped by centuries of grazing on steep fells, exposed commons, and stone-walled inbye fields. Lambs are born black, turn brown as they grow, and mature into sheep with a blue-grey fleece and a pale face and legs. The breed is compact, sure-footed, and strongly associated with hefting, the learned attachment of a flock to a particular fell grazing area.
Herdwicks are managed for hardy lamb production, landscape grazing, and cultural conservation rather than fast finishing. Their coarse, kempy wool is used for carpets, insulation, tweeds, and craft products, while the meat is valued for slow-grown hill flavor. Keeping them well outside their native system requires sound fencing, parasite awareness on lowland pasture, and realistic expectations about growth rate. When established hefts are sold or dispersed, flock knowledge can be as important as the sheep themselves.
