Herik
Herik is a Turkish local sheep breed or landrace associated with the central Black Sea and inner Anatolian transition zones, including areas around Amasya, Tokat, and neighboring provinces. It belongs among Turkey's native, often fat-tailed sheep kept for meat, milk, and coarse wool. Animals are generally medium sized and hardy, with local variation in markings, horn status, and fleece quality rather than the close uniformity expected in an international show breed.
Herik flocks are usually managed in village systems that combine seasonal grazing with winter housing and stored feed. Practical selection favors ewes that lamb reliably, raise marketable lambs, and cope with local pasture and climate. Because many Turkish native sheep have been crossed or absorbed into larger commercial populations, conservation or research work depends on confirming flock origin and documenting traits carefully. Buyers should treat the name as a regional genetic resource, not just a color or market label.
