Landais

Landais sheep are a French landrace from the Landes de Gascogne region of southwestern France. They are rustic sheep associated with heath, pine country, wetlands, and extensive grazing rather than intensive meat production. The breed is generally maintained for regional heritage, landscape management, and modest lamb production under conditions that would not suit heavier commercial sheep.

Landais flocks need selection for hardiness, feet, parasite resilience, and the ability to use rough forage. Their wool is usually secondary, and lamb growth may be slower than in specialized meat breeds. Conservation breeders should pay attention to source flock and regional type, because the value of Landais sheep rests on maintaining a local adaptation rather than merely keeping small rustic sheep.
