Meatmaster
Meatmaster is a modern South African hair sheep developed for meat production under extensive conditions. It draws on hardy African fat-tailed sheep and composite breeding, commonly associated with Damara and Dorper influence, while selecting away from an impractical fat tail and toward a more marketable carcass. The breed carries hair rather than a wool fleece, so it is managed outside the shearing-centered wool tradition.
Its place is in dry, hot, and sometimes large-range production where walking ability, fertility, mothering, parasite tolerance, and efficient lamb growth matter. Meatmaster flocks may vary in color and horn status, so practical selection should focus on structure, sound udders, lamb survival, and animals that shed cleanly. It can be useful in crossbreeding, but buyers should not treat the name as a guarantee of low-input success. The best sheep still come from breeders measuring performance under conditions close to the buyer's own farm.
